Hi my loves! This will be my last newsletter coming to you from Substack.
Oh, Substack—so many empty promises! So much platforming of nazis and other deplorable folks. There are also a lot of rad writers here, too, and I’ll continue to pay for some subscriptions. However, this space has progressed from a writer space to another social media app—one of which I don’t need.
I’m breaking up with Substack. I want to write a newsletter. I don’t want to see “likes” or “hearts” or a feed of status updates. I’m over it. SO over it. Being on here since 2020 has not been great for my writing. I have felt small and insignificant. I have felt used. I have felt my love of writing dry up. I have felt too often the desire to compare myself to others. I have tried in vain to get a cute orange Substack badge which would indicate that I have hundreds of paid subscribers, but for what? Who cares? I have a stupid Instagram badge (that I didn’t pay for) and it’s meaningless. I’m done with letting these shitty platforms determine my worth and success.
So. I’m paying $79/month to use Buttondown. This is money I don’t really have for this sort of thing, but I’m manifesting that I will somehow break even each month and maybe even make some cash. I’ve already transferred all of my post archives and subscribers to Buttondown. I have not transferred paid subscriptions (it looked too confusing for my dyscalculia) and I have canceled them here on Substack. If you paid for a year, please don’t feel obligated to pay again. Just know that I don’t know when you’re year is up. Anyway, I’m taking the goddamn plunge, and I hope you’ll join me.
The only thing for you to do is to upgrade your subscription to paid, if you so choose (there is still a free option). I had 88 paid subscribers on Substack, and ideally, would love to get to 200! It would mean a lot to me. Cost is the same as it has been here—$35/yr or $5/month) but no 10% for Substack! It’s a great way to support me as a writer, death doula, and librarian (always here for your reference questions!)
I really have appreciated all of you being here in this space with me (and in other online spaces!) If you have enjoy my Instagram, my writing, my book, any of it, please consider becoming a paid subscriber.
I will see you soon from my new newsletter home!
Much love,
Lachrista

I’m noticing a lot of serious writing friends hopping over to Buttondown, which is awesome. I trust their opinion/viewpoints on things so I think you’re making a wise decision, personally. :)
Thank you for sharing my post, Lachrista, and happy re-homing! Totally feel you on that decision. These imperfect platforms are maddening! Would love to know how you chose buttondown.
