On the big tree outside of my bedroom window, there is a branch clinging to dear life (or so I thought). It looks like it broke off from the tree at some point and is now stuck between some other branches. I had an urge to remove it; to free it—but it’s fine how it is. It’s still part of the tree—just no longer connected. It seems to have slid in between another couple of branches. The other branches are helping to hold it up; helping to keep it with the tree—with its home.
I have seen countless social media posts from white people who desperately want to help Palestinians. Many of these posts, however, are reinforcing colonization. They are engaging in white savior tactics. There have been posts from people calling for things like adoption of Palestinian children and babies. This is, of course, problematic and not at all a solution that the people of Palestine have requested.
I didn’t always know what I know now. Most of us don’t, right? As a white cis person who has surely benefitted from colonization, I’m sure I have engaged in my fair share of white saviorism as well. When you know better, you (hopefully) do better. As white people, we simply must resist in making decisions for communities we are not part of. Listening to these communities is what we should be doing. From there, we should be doing whatever is in alignment with what we have been told to do by these community members.
The Palestinian people deserve to live on their land. They deserve to have homes and families there. They deserve to grow up and grow old there. They deserve to die from old age in Palestine.
We must listen to them—for they know best about what they need. We must continue to bear witness to their struggle—to their ongoing genocide. Listening and bearing witness are the very least we can do.
There is a lot going on. I’m feeling it, you’re probably feeling it, too. It’s good for us to feel, notice, and witness. We mustn’t look away—not now, not ever.
I’m sending all my love to Palestinians in Palestine and across the world. Palestine will be free.
